Tu Tsung-ming (杜聰明, August 25, 1893 in Tamsui, Taiwan, Empire of Japan - February 25, 1986), was the first Doctor of Medical Sciences of Taiwan, as well as the first Taiwanese to hold a Ph.D. degree. He received his degree from Kyoto Imperial University (now Kyoto University) in 1922. He became the first Taiwanese professor in Japan's pre-1945 imperial university system, at Taihoku Imperial University (now National Taiwan University). His pharmacology research lab was the cradle of medical research in Taiwan.

In 1954, Tu founded Kaohsiung Medical College (now Kaohsiung Medical University) and became the first president of the College (1954-1966). In addition to participating in medical education, he also contributed in pharmacological and toxicological research.

Kaohsiung Medical University

The Kaohsiung Medical University (高雄醫學大學), originally known as "Kaohsiung Medical College", is a private university located in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. It is considered to be the most prestigious medical research and education institution in southern Taiwan.

Kaohsiung Medical College (KMC) was established in 1954 by the former Mayor of Kaohsiung City, Frank C. Chen, and Dr. Tu Tsung-Ming, the first Ph.D. of Medical Sciences of Taiwan. At the time of Kaohsiung Medical College's establishment, the college was the first private institution of its kind in Southern Taiwan. Dr. Tu, the founding Principal of KMC dedicated his life to fulfilling his teaching philosophy: "Embrace the Joy of Learning, Know the Cruciality of Research", and "Advance with Unwavering Resolution, Honour the Pursuit of Knowledge, Consecrate to the bettering of the World."

The college hospital, the "Chung-Ho Memorial Hospital", was founded three years after the establisment of KMC in June 1957. "Chung-Ho Memorial Hospital" is the largest medical center in southern Taiwan, and serves as a first-rate teaching hospital with exceptional medical health services. "Chung-Ho Memorial Hospital" has the three-pronged mission of educating students, advancing medical researches and provide medical services. In 1998, KMC, in agreement with the Kaohsiung Municipal Government, acquired an additional teaching hospital, the Hsiao-kang Hospital, which further strengthened KMC's capability in training superior medical professionals and providing outstanding medical services.

Kaohsiung Medical College was re-shaped into the "Kaohsiung Medical University (KMU)" in August 1999 with the permission of the Ministry of Education, Taiwan. The re-shaping was in response to the growing globalization around the world, and an effort to better meet the new challenges in a quick evolving society.

KMU was rated "superior" by the Ministry of Education, Taiwan in all categories of the "Mid-term School Administration Development Plan".
